Well it’s nice to know that the CEO of Google, Eric Schmidt, thinks the iPhone is the “perfect platform for the search specialist’s hosted applications.” Why does Mr. Schmidt think this way? It’s simple really – it’s because of Apple’s decision to support third party application development through the use of web technologies such as AJAX. That fits in very nicely to Google’s array of online applications - most if not all of which depend on some sort of AJAX oriented technique. With the iPhone in place, Google can easily transplant existing applications such as the Calendaring or Spreadsheets straight to the iPhone. Sorry – no Microsoft Office applications here.

Do I think that’s cool for iPhone users? Yes. Do I think Apple still should have opened up the platform a bit more? Yes.. Although I love the concept of web based applications, there’s something to be said about regular binary applications designed to run straight on the iPhone OS.

One final note – I’m a bit envious of the fact that Mr. Schmidt had an iPhone already. I suppose if I had that much cash on hand.. I’d have one too. Bah!
