Dell begins selling unlocked GSM phones
Well would you look at this. Dell is apparently now selling unlocked mobile phones on their website. According to this blog posting on News.com, the company has expanded their product offerings to include phones from Nokia and Pharos. The specific phones on sale at this point are the Nokia E61, E61i, N73, N80 and N95, and the Pharos 600 and 600E. These phones are being offered as unlocked phones which means they’ll usable by any GSM carrier. Prices for the phones range from $383 to $736 – but that’s to be expected since they’re selling unlocked phones without a carrier contract. Signing up to a contract typically means the phones are subsidized.
You’ll find the new mobile phones under the Small Business Accessories section on Dell’s website. Why the move to selling phones? According to Dell, it’s part of the strategy to move away from pen-based PDAs to multi-function phones (or smart phones).
