I just wanted to provide a little shameless plug to a website that I am closely affiliated with. It’s called Kontrib and of course, you’ll find it at well.. Kontrib.com.
In case you’re not familiar with it, Kontrib is what we like to call, a multi-lingual social bookmarking website. The social bookmarking category was popularized by the likes of Digg and del.icio.us and has since spread all around the world. You’ll find “Digg-like” sites in Spanish, French, Arabic, .. you name it! What Kontrib attempts to do is to unite all the different languages into a single cohesive audience. It’s not an easy task of course and it’s not perfect by any means. Kontrib utilizes statistical machine translation technology from Language Weaver to deliver coverage in Arabic, English, French, and Spanish. The concept is quite simple. Submit a story in French and it’ll get automatically translated into the other languages. Visitors who speak Spanish will hopefully understand the French story – simply because it’s available in machine translated Spanish. Same for Arabic – same for English. Share to the website and you share with everyone as much as possible.
Our basic goal was to break down the walls of communication that exist between languages and demonstrate how machine translation technology can radically change the way the Internet is utilized. Of course, Kontrib is a work in progress but we hope all of you readers will begin to utilize it more and more. We here at Krunker love it because it gives us a way to see what goes on in other parts of the world – even if we don’t understand the original language. Kontrib gives us the opportunity to peer into what the original story was all about – thanks to statistical machine translation.
