Sopranos Finale Rundown - SPOILERS

Here’s something totally different ..

Since tonight’s the last episode of the Sopranos, I thought I’d provide a play by play as the show happens

SPOILERS….

YOU’VE BEEN WARNED…

WARNED….

Finally - sorry if I don’t get all the names right now. I can’t remember them all.

Tony’s asleep..

Wakes up to the alarm clock - appears to be the morning after

Shifts to night time. Tony and Paulie are sitting together at a beverage van near the airport? - they’re waiting for someone

You see a car in the distance. Tony walks to the car.

Tony goes into the car and meets the fed agent.

They’re talking about some airport thing.. Tony doesn’t want to hear about it at all.

Agent asks Tony what’s up.

Tony called the agent and wanted to tell him about a bank that he overheard was related to the Arabic men.. but apparently there’s more to this.

Tony asks the agent if he knows where Phil Leotardo is. Agent Harris laughs and doesn’t know says “you’re overreaching”.

Next day - Tony and driver drives to see Carmela and Meadow.

Tony sees Carm and they hug.

Carm tells Tony that she has get home. She went to see Sil and Gab.

You see AJ open the back door and let her female friend go.

Uncle Bobby’s funeral is on Thursday

Large FBI presence to be expected at funeral according to Carm.

Scene switches to the restaurant with everyoine gathered. Looks like it’s already Thursday??

You see Paulie walking to a table and being asked to sit down by Bobby’s niece (first time we see her?) Paullie talks about losing both his mom and Bobby.

The table is talking about Dreamgirls. A.J. tells people “you people are f*cked - you’re living in a dream”. A.J. starts rambling about Bush and terrorists. He’s clearly a mad and angry kid.

Back at the safe house now. Everyone’s sitting around watching TV.

Tony gets some money, eats some food, and just appears to be waiting.

Some of the guys ask Tony if he wants to join them in seeing Sil.

Tony goes upstairs.

Switch to Little Italy and the NY crew.

You hear Phil call one of his guys. No one in NY knows where he is. You see Phil being pissed - he says Tony should have been the first to go. His men infer maybe they should reach out to Tony but Phil rejects that notion.

Switch to Tony visiting Janice.

Janice says “Need to snag another husband”. She thanks Tony for being there. They talk about the kids a little bit. Oh - they’re at Johnny Sack’s old house which is now Janice’s house of course. They continue to talk about Janice and Sophia. This is basically a quiet moment between Tony and Janice. Tony tells Janice “if you need anything, I’m minutes away”

Agent Harris calls back Tony and tells him that there have been multiple calls traced back to a gas station with a phonebooth - this is an inference to Phil’s hideout? Looks like Phil is using some gas station as a way to call his guys.

Harris is sitting in bed .. a woman comes out of the bathroom - doesn’t look like it’s his wife.. but rather another female cop? He’s cheating?

Quick switch to some of Tony’s men scoping out the gas station in question.

Switch to A.J. and the girl sitting in the woods (near their home??) listening to music. A.J. mentions “this could be a mistake”. She says “We’re good friends”. They kiss. Love interest becomes reality? Yeah.. they start going at it.

Engine appears to be smoking and the smoke comes into the car. Car’s now on fire on the outside.

They run out of the car (the Xterra) and the car is engulfed in flames… then blows up. Great.. a fire in the woods.

Pan to Carm’s hideaway. Tony yells at A.J. about the car.

A.J. talks about how he is depressed. This is the scene where you find A.J. is all dirty - because of the smoke and running from the car.

FBI listening to a call from Tony to someone? Tony asks the guy (George) to reach out to the little guy (Phil’s men?). Supply a neutral location guaranteeing everyone’s safety.

Pan to a warehouse? SUV driving in with people standing around. It’s men from NY and NJ (Paulie and Tony). All the men are patted down.

Carmine Jr. is there, along with people from Phil’s side minus Phil. They basically talk it out between the different men. Carmine Jr. is quiet. He then says “It didn’t have to be this way.” The little guy says “Phil’s gone too far” - he won’t help Tony but he does say ” you do what you gotta do”. Tony wants something in return for NY killing Bobby. They agree on some price. They leave with hands shaking. Looks like NY and NJ are good? (except for Phil of course)

Sopranos move back home and back into the Bing. The cat from the safe house comes back to the Bing. Paulie’s pissed about the cat but Tony tells Paulie to leave the cat alone.

Paulie is out still looking for a gas station.

Switch to Janice visiting Uncle Junior at the care facility. Jr. is sitting with friend. Jr. doesn’t quite recognize Janice. Apparently their final moment together. Janice shows Jr. her baby but Jr. calls the baby Janice.

Janice decides to tell Jr. that Bobby is dead. She says “Your Bobby”.

Switch to the Bing. Jr’s friend is there visiting Tony - asking him “aren’t you even curious about him?” Tony says “He can f*cking rot”

A.J. is at therapy (someone new?) and talking to a lady. He’s talking about the car getting caught on fire.

Paulie goes to visit the Bing - looking for Carlo? The Bing is empty - lights out. Paulie calls Tony and tells him Carlo didn’t show even though he was supposed to have a meeting with him. Tony calls him back. Paulie tells Tony that maybe they were had? Tony says - what if Carlo flipped? Paulie then says Carlo’s kid was picked up yesterday for selling E.

Switch to home - you see Meadow’s old friend - Hunter back. She’s in her second year of med school and is visiting Meadow. It’s a little gathering at home now. Meadow’s Pat and family are there visiting the Sopranos.

Pat mentions how they might hire Meadow coming out of Law School. Starting salaries would be 170K. Tony and Carm are happy.

Switch to the Bing. Cat is staring at Christopher’s picture. Paulie walks in and sees the cat staring. Paulie says “this animals history today!”. Paulie is about to whack the cat when Tony walks in. Paulie stops and tells Tony the cat gives him creeps. Tony tells Paulie he wants to skipper Carlo’s gig. Paulie isn’t exactly happy - was hoping to take it easy and sit with T. Tony finally agrees though he’s clearly not happy. Paulie walks out unhappy.

A new gas station. One of Tony’s men still looking for Phil. They’re all looking for a gas station with a pay phone.

Tony driving - sees A.J. jogging along the road. Starts singing Rocky song and tells A.J. to get into the car. A.J. tells Tony that he’s going to join the Army. He says he hasn’t signed anything yet. Tony says “Are you nuts?”. A.J. wants to go to Afghanistan. Tony tells A.J. not to do anything until they have a chance to talk. Tony tells Carm he’s going to join the army. Then quickly pans to Tony talking to A.J.’s therapist. Carm walks in. Carm says “Maybe the Army would be great for him if there wasn’t a war going on.”

Therapist won’t reveal much more to the family of course. Tony starts complaining about therapy then starts talking about his mom.. switching right into therapy mode - as if Melfie was around.

Tony is having dinner with Meadow. He asks her about A.J. Tony talks about her career choices etc. Meadow talks about what motivated her to be a lawyer - which ultimately was about how Tony was dragged away in handcuffs all the time.

Pan to Phil, wife and kids.. stopping at a gas station. Phil walks out. Talks to wife.. gun comes out from the left and a bullet goes into Phil’s head. Wife walks out of the car and the car rolls forward over Phil’s head. Yeah Phil’s dead.

Pan to FBI agent’s tracking terror. Agent Harris is told Phil is popped. Agent Harris smiles and goes “We’re gonna win this thing!”. Ha - who’s side is he on

Tony and Carm sit down with A.J. and tell him that joining the Army is not in his best interest. They continue to convince him to not join. He won’t make a difference they say. Tony shows A.J. a screenplay that he got. The screenplay is about a private detective that gets sucked into his data port etc etc. Tony tells A.J. that Carmine is interested in working on it and basically tells him that he can work for Carmine for the project. Then possibly someday, A.J. can get a club.

Tony having lunch with lawyer. Lawyer mentions that Tony has 80-90 percent chance of being indicted. Probably that Carlo flipped? Tony obviously gets pissed.

Pan to Sil in the hospital. Sil’s wife is sitting there. Tony comes in. We finally see Tony and Sil together alone. Tony is sitting down .. watches “Little Miss Sunshine” on TV. Leans over to Sil and holds his hand. Sil never wakes up and Tony never says a thing.

Pan to Satriale’s. Paulie and Tony sitting out front. Tony says “So?”. Paulie says “All due respect - I’m going to pass. Every guy who ran that crew has died.” Basically everyone has died in that role and Paulie doesn’t want a piece of that. Tony talks to Paulie about death and the cat - the issues that Paulie has. Tony says that since Chris’s death, his gambling results have turned 180. Paulie tells Tony that he saw the Virgin Mary at the Bing. Tony says “why didn’t you tell me this before?” they could have made money by putting up a shrine for people there. Paulie gets pissed and then laughs - calling Tony a “prick”. Paulie tells Tony ” I live but to serve you”

Tony leaves Paulie to sunning himself in front. The cat comes up and lies down next to him.

A.J. walks out of the production studios into his new BMW M3 car. Ha - so much for not driving again. He talks about how he’s not driving a gas guzzling SUV anymore. He goes to pick up his girl at school and drives off home with music blaring from his car. A.J. and girl are sitting at home watching TV and laughing. Carm is looking at design plans for homes.

Pan to Tony outside in the back cleaning up the leaves. He looks up at the sky. Carm comes out and tells him where they are going to eat tonight. Tony has to go meet some people and will meet them there.

Pan to Tony visiting Uncle Jr. Tony and Uncle Jr. have their final moment together. Uncle Jr. doesn’t remember Tony - says “we used to play catch.” Tony says “you don’t remember you shot me?” Tony sits down with Uncle Jr. and tells him that any money should go to Bobby’s kids. Bobby was a made guy and it wouldn’t be right if money didn’t go to this kids. Tony tells Uncle Jr. that if he remembers where his money is, the money should go to the kids. Tony then realizes “You don’t know who I am do you?” “Do you remember Johnny Boy? Your kid brother”. Uncle Jr. has a clueless face.Tony tells Jr. that he and his dad ran North Jersey. Uncle Jr. goes “We did? Well, that’s nice.”

Tony gets up and walks away.

He’s in the restaurant looking at music to play and waiting for Carm. Carm finally walks in. Music switches. Tony and Carm say “Hey”.

“What looks good tonight” says Carm.

“I dunno” says Tony

They talk about the kids and where they are. Tony tells Carm that Carlo is going to testify. A.J. walks in. Seems like everytime the door opens in the restaurant, they’re expecting something.

Meadow pulls over and tries to parallel park her car.

There’s a guy sitting at the counter who keeps looking over at Tony for some reason. He keeps looking over.. finally gets up and goes to the mens room. Two black men enter in the restaurant. For some reason, this is shown. Meadow keeps trying to parallel park her car and finally does so. She then runs into the restaurant. Tony looks up.. and then the series ends. Not even a fade to black - more like a quick cut to blank. No music.. nothing for about 4 seconds.. then credits roll. No music. The end.

So you’re left wondering..

What happens.

Was the guy in the restaurant a threat to Tony? Why the emphasis on Meadow parking her car? Why the buildup back and forth. We’ll never know. Was Tony looking up at her daughter or at something else?
