Samsung dropping $799 600MHz Q1 Ultra
If you’ve been waiting for the low end Samsung Q1 Ultra UMPC to come out at $799, you better start looking for a different model (or a different vendor.. or a different platform!). DailyTech is reporting that Samsung is apparently dropping the low end $799 model in favor of a higher end, faster processor system. When the Q1 Ultra first came out, there were supposed to be several models with the $799 model featuring a 600 MHz Intel A100 processor, 1GB of RAM, 40GB HDD, and a 7 inch display. This lower end model was going to be the Q1U-EL. Now many forums and even online retailers have shown the Q1U-EL to have a faster 800MHz Intel A110 processor instead – and with a higher price too! Many vendors are showing the new device in the mid to upper $800 dollar range.
So why the switch? Well it looks like the 600 MHz processor was just way too slow for Windows Vista Home Premium. Heck.. I think anyone could have told you that! Heck – does a 800 MHz processor make any sense for Vista either? Does even having Vista on a UMPC make sense??? OK.. I’m not going there. Anyway, the point is – don’t expect at $799 600MHz model anymore.
