Tough week for Sony PlayStation unit
Looking back at this week, it just wasn’t Sony’s week was it? First came a report that the Nintendo Wii had outsold the Sony PlayStation 3 by five to one in Japan last month. Five to one folks. Of course a single PS3 costs as much as two Nintendo Wii’s.. but come on now – Nintendo’s making money on their console – Sony isn’t. According to this report over at News.com, the actual sales figures for May were 45,321 units of the PS3 and a whopping 251,794 units for the Wii (and yet I still have a hard time finding the Wii here in California).
So you’re thinking.. ok that’s just Japan but the numbers in the US are humbling for Sony also. In April, the Wii was the top selling new console for the fourth month in a row. Nintendo sold 360,000 units while Sony sold only 82,000 units. Woah.. that’s a little over 4 to 1. Geez.
Clearly the slow PS3 sales are having an effect at Sony as another blog posting at News.com earlier this week mentioned that around 80 employees from Sony Computer Entertainment of America (SCEA) were laid off in Foster City, CA. SCEA spokesman, Dave Karraker, was quoting as saying “In an effort to accurately align the company to meet the changing needs of our consumers and our industry, (SCEA) has found it necessary to…restructure the company as necessary to continue our standing as the market leader.”
Tough times for Sony. Does anyone see a rebound for them anytime soon?
