Seriously now – how many different flash memory card form factors are we going to have in this world? We already have so many different formats that I won’t even attempt to name them all (I was perfectly happy with CompactFlash people!). I suppose as devices get smaller and smaller, someone will have the bright idea that the flash cards should also get smaller and smaller. Sheesh. Soon they’ll get so small, I won’t even be able to find them! (How many of you have lost an SD card before? I HAVE!). Ok.. so with that long preface, I can now talk about Pretec’s announcement of their new S-Diamond product  the world’s first implementation of the miCARD format. The miCARD is a new flash memory card standard from the MMC Association and it supports both USB and SD/MMC specifications. Ingenious eh?

The miCARD measures only 21 x 12 x 1.95 mm – making it the smallest USB flash drive on the market – with an area 40 percent smaller than a miniSD card. If you have a device that requires an SD/MMC card – no problem – you can get an SD/MMC adapter and slip a miCARD right in without any difficulties.

Now the Pretec S-Diamond is their second generation i-Disk Diamond series device. Capacities will range from 128MB to a whopping 8GB in space. S-Diamond cards should start rolling out sometime in Q3 of this year. OK. I have to admit – it’s pretty sweet to see something so small be able to store so much.. but like I said in the beginning – do we really need yet another format?
