Well I’ll be! I had a feeling that the Segway would be useful someday (other than to the super rich that is). New York’s finest is apparently deploying 10 brand new Segways in places like Coney Island, Central Park, Prospect Park, Orchard Park, the Bronx Zoo, and Flushing Meadow Park. According to this NY Daily News article, approximately 25 NYPD cops are being trained to use the new Segways. In fact, if you’re a Yankees or Mets fan, you’ll soon see these rechargeable Segways in action over at their respective baseball stadiums.

There is one interesting twist to this. Segways apparently do not meet safety standards in NY and thus can’t be legally registered in the state – making them illegal for use on streets or sidewalks – hence their use in parks :) Funny world.

I love the end quote from the article:

“Mayor Bloomberg talks about having a green city,” said Gleich, who still rides his Segway about 11/2 hours from Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, to midtown three times a week. “He can start by helping to make Segways legal.”Robert F. Moore

I had this strange vision just now – can you imagine being chased down by a cop on a Segway? Now that would be a sight to see.
