Last week, Warner Home Video announced that they were the first studio to surpass sales of 100,000 copies of a high definition title with Martin Scorsese’s “The Departed”. In fact, Warner Home Video currently has the top two selling high definition titles in “The Departed” and “Superman Returns”, as well as three of the other top 10 hits – “Batman Begins”, “Happy Feet”, and “Goodfellas”.

Warner Home Video attributes the high sales due to a combination of great content (of course they would) and the fact that they support both HD DVD ad Blu-ray. The second half of the statement makes the most impact to the me as a consumer – the mere fact that Warner Home Video is making a stand and saying “Hey – we outsell the rest of the studios simply because we give the consumer a choice. You want HD DVD? You want Blu-ray? No problem – we’ll provide both.” That’s exactly what I would like to hear and I hope the other major studio houses eventually realize this. Forget the Blu-ray vs. HD DVD format wars and concentrate on making titles available in both formats. Both formats have their merits so let the consumers make the ultimate decision folks!
