Dell begins selling three Ubuntu Linux systems
The expected Dell Linux systems were indeed true after all. Dell announced on Thursday that they would begin to sell three consumer systems packaged with Ubuntu Linux. The three systems were the Dell XPS 410n, the Dimension E520n, and the Inspiron E1505n. The Dell systems are now available for purchase at http://www.dell.com/open.
Of particular interest to me is this quote from the official Dell press release:
With no software licensing costs associated with Ubuntu, the base price for each system is competitively priced and fully configured.
You’re basically paying for the hardware – something I’ve always been looking for (who really wants to pay for Windows if they don’t plan on using it right?). Here’s the breakdown for the three systems:
- 15.4 inch TrueLife WXGA display
- Intel Pentium Dual Core T2080
- 512MB shared memory
- 80 GB HDD
- CDRW/DVD ROM
- Intel Media Accelerator 950 graphics
- Intel PRO Wireless 3945
- Prices start at $599
- 17 inch flat panel display
- Intel Core 2 Duo E4300
- 1GB shared memory
- 250 GB HDD
- CDRW/DVD ROM
- 256MB NVIDIA GeForec 7300LE TurboCache
- 10/100 Ethernet
- Prices start at $599
- 19 inch flat panel display
- Intel Core 2 Duo E4300
- 1GB shared memory
- 250GB HDD
- DVD+/- RW
- 256 MB NVIDIA GeForce 7300LE TurboCache
- 10/100 Ethernet
- Prices start at $849
You know – I’ve been looking to build a small simple server box but my goodness – I can configure an E520 with a Core 2 Duo running at 1.8GHz for $409 (with items stripped down such as no monitor and keyboard etc).
