Western Digital ships 250 GB WD Scorpio 2.5 inch SATA Hard Drive
Get ready for ever larger notebook hard drives folks. Western Digital has announced that they have begun shipping their new 250 GB WD Scorpio 2.5 inch Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive. The new drives use perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology to achieve higher storage capacities in limited physical space. These drives mark the second generation of WD hard drives that use perpendicular magnetic recording technologies.
Features of the WD Scorpio drive include:
- 5400 RPM spin speed and 12 ms access time
- WD’s WhisperDrive technology which combines state of the art seeking algorithms to yield one of the quietest 2.5 inch hard drives out there. The algorithms optimize how the drive seeks for daya which significantly improves power consumption resulting in a quieter system (less of a need for cooling fans)
- WD’s ShockGuard technology to protect the drive mechanics and platter surfaces from shocks
- WD’s SecurePark which parks the recording heads off the disk surface during spin up, spin down, and when the drive is off
