Google phone to ship by the end of the year
For those of you who actually care about the supposed Google phone, here’s some interesting information from NewLaunches.com. Apparently High Tech Computer (HTC) announced that the Google phone would be shipping by the end of the year with initial volumes nearing 1 million units. The Google handset will be available globally in 2008 and will support both 3G and EDGE networks.
You’ll of course find Gmail and Google search integrated right into the phone. What’s interesting is the notion that HTC is the phone manufacturer for the Google phone. Since HTC is primarily known for Windows based mobile phones, it’s not clear what OS the Google phone will support. We can’t imagine Google using Windows Mobile as their OS so could it be some Linux derivative? Of course.. here’s the other notion. In order for the phone to be truly successful in the business world, you’ll want an OS that businesses will adopt. That is, for better or for worse, Windows Mobile. So if that’s the case, then perhaps Windows Mobile might be a viable platform for Google. In any event, our gut feel is – don’t bet on it. If Google doesn’t want the business market, then it’s all up in the air as to what exactly Google will do here. We know one thing – you won’t see Palm’s Linux OS here since Palm has already acknowledged that they want the OS for their Treo lineup only. So that boils it down to some Linux derivative, Symbian OS, or perhaps something Google will develop on their own?
