Missed this one last week – PC World published a review of the world’s first hard drive to reach 1 terabyte – the Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000. The 7K1000 is a single 3.5 inch 7200 RPM hard drive designed for people who need LOTS of disk space with excellent performance. Features of the Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 include:

  • 3 Gb/s SATA interface
  • 32 MB data buffer

How does Hitachi manage to get 1 TB into a single hard drive? Well the drive’s five platters each is capable of storing 200 GB – this is up from 100 GB per platter for typical 500 GB hard drives. How much for 1 TB you might ask? $399.. which to me isn’t bad at all!

So here’s the verdict:

The deep-bucket capacity and solid performance of the Deskstar–not to mention the limitless possibilities of what I can do with a one-terabyte hard drive more than justifies the premium price tag.
