Palm to release Linux based smartphones by the end of the year
You can expect to see Palm Treo handhelds using the Linux OS by the end of the year according to Chief Executive Ed Colligan of Palm. Colligan announced yesterday that the company has been developing a Linux based OS for several years now and that the new OS will greatly improve the stability of the company’s smart phone lineup.
Windows Mobile users shouldn’t fret though. Palm will continue to release Treo smartphones utilizing the Windows Mobile platform. Windows Mobile based devices are much more widely accepted in the business markets so Palm can’t simply ditch that market for Linux.
What is particularly interesting here is – Palm has no plans to license the OS to other phone manufacturers. The Linux-based system will be kept in hour for their Treo lineup. So would you consider purchasing a Linux based smartphone device? My take – if it synced well with my Windows desktop then I’d definitely consider it.
