This is one of the gifts that I got on my wedding! It's still pretty useful up to now and my hubby's looking forward to buy one for the kids' room as well.

[...] Here’s a peculiar device. It looks a little like the Apple TV - except it’s not from Apple - it’s from Philips. This brushed aluminum device is somewhat similar in concept to the Apple TV - minus of course the online store portion. The Philips device comes with an internal 40 GB hard drive which can be used to store multimedia content locally to the system. It’s also capable of streaming content from networked systems. On the back side, you’ll find an HDMI port, an optical output, and a USB port. Oh - one thing better than the Apple TV - it actually comes with an on/off switch. No word on lots of things though. We have no idea what file formats it will support, what kind of interface it will and how much it will cost. Heck we don’t even know the name of the product but what we do know is - people like copying Apple designs sometimes! Sorry - but I still think Apple TV’s design takes the cake here.
The Apple TV is similar to the XBox when the Xbox is used as an extender. Both rely on a computer to store and send the photos, video and audio data. The Apple TV does not need to have a DVR or a tuner, those functions are provided by the host computer.
The Apple TV could be improved in many ways but it is small and has no spare volume to include a 3.5" hard drive and tuner.
If the next Mac Mini were increased in size to match the Apple TV, there may be space in it to include a tuner and all the related I/O connections. The two together would make a great home theater combination.

[...] Here’s some exciting news for Slingbox and Apple TV owners out there. CNET has confirmed with Sling Media that the company is indeed working on making the Slingbox compatible with the new Apple TV (which we just published a review of). The Slingbox is known for it’s placeshifting capabilities - the ability to stream video content from a variety of set top boxes to devices around the world via an Internet connection.
cferry - my apologies on that - yes you are correct. Apple does utilize H.264 and MPEG-4 for video codecs but the proprietary text was meant for the DRM attached to the video. I will correct the article. In any event, what I really meant to say was:
1. I purchase content from iTunes and I can only play it on iTunes compatible hardware (iPod, Apple TV etc).
2. I purchase content from PlaysForSure sites, I can only play on PlaysForSure compatible devices.
Ultimately the same thing - proprietary standards that lock you into a single platform. This isn't a codec issue but a DRM issue at the end of the day.
Also it should be noted that Microsoft will be updating the Xbox 360 to support MPEG-4 and H.264 also.

Why do you suggest that H.264 and MPEG-4 are proprietary standards like WMV? Yes, the DRMed files bought from iTunes have proprietary FairPlay DRM, but H.264 and MPEG-4 are open standards available to all. WMV, on the other hand is hellishly proprietary! Microsoft has bought into the whole "you can buy it but you can never own it" RIAA and MPAA attempt to put an end to the "fair use" defined by the US Supreme Court for analog music and movies.

There is no problem ripping your DVD on iTunes ready for your Apple TV using appropriate software. MediaFork for instance is free and very effective. And you have full DVD quality on your big screen TV

iPod Metaphor

The AppleTV can be a glorified iPod. Thats good. It also needs a TiVO-esque DVR and tuner.

Plus, I have a ton of DVD's that I would like to download to an AppleTV much like I have loaded ALL of my CD's to iTunes. What fun it would be to be able to watch what I want when I want.

The most obvious thing about this product is that it is intentionally crippled for one reason or another.

Expect to see updates covering alot of the things we want. All at a price, of course.

If they don't update the product, expect to see it in the same dust-bin as the Newton and the Cube.
