Sony to release PS3 update on Thursday – includes support for Folding @home
Sony has announced that they will be releasing a new software update for the Playstation 3 this Thursday. The new update contains several console enhancements including added support for the use of Bluetooth peripherals, a new on screen QWERTY keyboard, and enhanced download capabilities (you can now queue up to six downloads at a time from the PlayStation store). The most notable addition to the update is built in support for Folding @Home.
Not familiar with Folding @Home? It’s a Stanford University created, distributed computing project designed to “understand the process of protein folding and how it correlates to serious diseases.” This project requires enormous CPU resources and as a result has turned to the Internet as a way to tap into unused CPU cycles. With this PS3 update installed, PS3 owners will have the option of joining the folding team and make their console available for number crunching purposes when the system isn’t in use.
