Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 now available for free
Microsoft has announced that Virtual PC 2007 is now available as a free download from their website. With Virtual PC, you can run multiple OS’s at the same time on the same physical computer. Virtual PC 2007 will also support the new virtualization technologies introduced by both AMD and Intel. Features of Virtual PC 2007 include:
- Support for Windows Vista as both a host and a guest
- Support for Windows Vista 64 bit as a host
- Improved performance over Virtual PC 2004
The following OS’s are supported under Microsoft’s Virtual PC 2007.
- Windows 98 and 98 SE
- Windows Me
- Windows 2000 Professional
- Windows XP Home and Professional
- Windows Vista Enterprise, Business, Ultimate
- OS/2 Warp
Although Linux is not listed by Microsoft, we assume that Linux will be bootable within a Virtual PC 2007 (we’ll have to try that out to see).
So why make this free? Well according to Microsoft:
Microsoft is investing strongly in virtualization technology for hardware and applications across client and servers. The value in virtualization technology moving forward will be in the management and the operating system rather than in the virtualization stack.
