Microsoft is set to formally announced Windows Mobile 6.0 this coming Monday at the 3GSM trade show being held in Barcelona. According to News.com, Windows Mobile 6.0 (formerly known as Crossbow) will “feature improved search, better security, and tighter integration with Windows Live services.”

Similar to Windows Vista, Windows Mobile 6 will feature enhanced search which will allow users to search for things across a variety of items. All you need to do is type a few letters and watch matching results show up from places like your contact listings, emails, and music files. Personally, it’ll be interesting to see how Windows Mobile handles the job of indexing files – especially in light of the fact that indexing can be a processor intensive activity (maybe they’ll index only when your mobile device is connected to external power?)

Here are some other enhancements according to the News.com article:

  • Support for new Windows Live Instant Messenger client
  • Tighter integration with email services like Hotmail and Windows Live Mail
  • Ability to encrypt data stored on removable memory cards
  • Policies can be set requiring passwords to be changed regularly
  • Support for VoIP calling

As we mentioned earlier, gone is the Pocket PC Phone Edition and the Smartphone Edition. In their places respectively will be Windows Mobile Professional and Windows Mobile Standard. There will also be a PDA version called Windows Mobile Classic.

Finally one thing to keep in mind. Just because Windows Mobile 6 will be formally introduced on Monday doesn’t mean actual devices will be available immediately. Most products using the new OS won’t begin to show their faces till the second half of the year!

[Check it out]
