Well well well.. let the Zune phone rumors heat up again! CrunchGear has posted some interesting information about a supposed Microsoft meeting set to take place today. The meeting of the minds will talk about a new Zune phone and what the strategies will be for such a device. Interesting huh?

So here are some of the specs that CrunchGear has posted about the supposed phone…

  • Zune phone will be a smartphone device
  • It will work in concert with the Zune marketplace (if it didn’t, it would be retarded wouldn’t it?)
  • It won’t run Windows Mobile (I’m personally find this one hard to believe)
  • Will sync with the Xbox 360
  • Video streaming from system to the phone via wireless

Some of it sounds about right to me.. some of it sounds a bit fishy (especially the no Windows Mobile part). It’s hard to imagine Microsoft creating a device that doesn’t run Windows Mobile at it’s core. Heck even the Zune is basically a repackaged Portable Media Center device with a different UI.

So here’s the real  kicker. CrunchGear claims that the new phone will be slated for the 2007 holiday season. That’s right. 2007. Do you think Microsoft is capable of pulling this off in 9 months time? As I mentioned via ZuneSphere – I’d rather see Microsoft get it right than have them pull pieces or components together to make a new phone. That’s partially why I can’t believe it’s not Windows Mobile based. Windows Mobile has all the ncessary pieces to make this happen. All you need to do is design a new GUI on top of Windows Mobile and you’re all set.
