Windows Mobile 6 to have three different versions
If you thought Microsoft Windows has gone through a number of different names over the years, then you’d be correct. Some of the names that stand out (and that I can vaguely remember) for Windows include – Windows itself, Windows 286, 386 (yes.. I was around when these were out folks), Windows 3.0, 3.1, 3.11, Windows for Workgroups, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows NT 3.x, Windows NT 4.0, Windows XP, and now Windows Vista. Phew.. all that, and it’s only the desktop OS!
Now if you think that’s bad.. consider the number of naming incarnations that the mobile version of Windows has had to go through. There was Microsoft CE and all the different versions of CE. There was the Pocket PC version of CE. There was Smartphone Edition of CE.. there was Windows Mobile 5.. and finally, there’s Windows Mobile 6 – (known internally as Crossbow). But wait.. like typical Windows products, Windows Mobile 6 is segmented into different categories because as we all know, segmenting a market makes good business (even if it doesn’t necessarily make consumer sense).
According to Smartphone Thoughts, the new segments for Windows Mobile 7 will be as follows:
- Windows Mobile 6 Standard which is the replacement for today’s Windows Mobile Smartphone edition
- Windows Mobile 6 Professional which is the replacement for today’s Pocket PC Phone Edition
- Windows Mobile 6 Classic which is what we know of as Pocket PC.
So.. if this truly is … well true, then we can finally say goodbye to the Pocket PC nomenclature. It’s all about Windows Mobile now.. and the different versions of Windows Mobile.
