Intel brings 802.11n support to Centrino platform
Intel has announced that they are upgrading the wireless component of their Centrino platform to support the new Draft 2.0 of the 802.11n wireless specification. The new Wireless-N component is found within a new embedded 802.11 a/b/g/Draft-N PCIe minicard network adapter card which will operate in both the 2.4 GHz range and the 5.0 GHz range.
According to this report at ExtremeTech, the new adapter will provide up to five times the performance of previous 802.11 a/g solutions and will provide up to one extra hour of notebook battery life when compared to existing draft-N products.
In keeping with their marketing tradition, Intel also announced a new certification program called “Connect with Centrino”. Any product with the “Connect with Centrino” logo will have gone through a certification process to ensure that the product works with Intel’s wireless N product.
As for the 802.11n specification, everything should be finalized by October of 2008 (Draft 2.0 will be followed by one more Draft called Draft 3.0 before final approval).
