Clearly Apple has the expertise and capabilities to build a Tablet oriented Mac system if they really wanted to (just look at the iPhone for proof of that!). However, despite that, they’ve provided no hint or proof that they would even consider developing such a system.

However, if you can’t wait for such a system to exist, check out the Axiotron ModBook whch is available over at Other World Computing. It’s actually an after-market hardware mod kit that turns an Apple MacBook into a fully functional tablet oriented Mac system. Once the mod kit is applied, the MacBook is turned into a slate style tablet PC system. You’ll be able to write and draw directly on the screen and use Mac OS X’s built in handwriting recognition software.

Other features include:

  • ModBook’s Top Shell and interior display frame made out of aircraft quality magnesium alloy
  • Integrated iSight camera
  • Replaceable screen covers made from chemically strengthened glass
  • Employs digitizer technology from WACOM
  • Compatible with Apple Inkwell
  • Optional GPS capability with SiRFstar III chipset

OWC is selling the ModBook at the following prices.

$2199 for a 1.83 Intel Core 2 Duo system. $2399 for a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo system with 1GB of RAM and 80GB HDD, and $2699 for a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo system with 2 GB of RAM and 160GB HDD.
