Apple sells 21 million iPods this past quarter
This holiday season was certainly a blessed one for Apple as they’ve reported a first quarter profit of $1 billion dollars. iPod sales increased by 50 percent year over year with overall revenues clocking in at $7.1 billion which is up 25 percent year over year.
Yes the revenue and profit numbers are impressive but I actually found the following number the most impressive – 21 million iPods were sold the quarter just ended for Apple – compared to 14 million the year before. These 21 million iPods resulted in $3.4 billion dollars in revenues.
iPods aside, the Apple Mac business was also doing fairly well with overall unit sales increasing by 28 percent year over year. The 28 percent increase in Mac sales was mostly a result of increased sales in the notebook business. Interestingly enough, desktop unit shipments fell this quarter which could be a problem especially since one makes the most profit from high end systems.
