Could Microsoft be set to announce a Home Media Server product?
“Home is where the heart is..”
Forget that folks!
“Home is where the money is!”
I think that’s the better caption for the coming week as numerous companies are expected to announce products to work with the digital home or digital living room. One of these companies expected to make a splash will be Microsoft as rumors have it that they are planning to announce a new home media server product.
According to the folks at NewsFactor, Microsoft Chairman – Bill Gates, is expected to show off a new device that will store and distribute digital content between devices around the home. The device would act as both a server for digital content as well as a centralized storage system.
The one sticking point at this moment would be the price of such a product. One price quote floating around has the device costing in the thousands of dollars – not something affordable for the average home is it?
If the home media server rumors are true, then Microsoft will almost certainly need to make the product more affordable in order to gain market penetration. You know – I’d love a scenario where I had an Xbox 360 acting as a front end to a home media server product populated by content recorded from a Windows Media Center based system. Now that would be my ideal setup folks!
In any event, stay tuned for tomorrow as it’s quite possible that Mr. Gates will announce such a device at his CES keynote.
