CamcorderInfo has published a review of the Sony HDR-FX7 High Definition Handycam here on their website. The HDR-FX7 is a 1080i 3 CMOS sensor camcorder designed for the consumer market (though at $3K, it’s a bit expensive for most common folk). Here are the specs to the HDR-FX7:

  • Three -1/4″ ClearVid CMOS sensors with 1120K effective pixels
  • HDV Recording Format
  • Switchable HDV/DV format recording
  • Reeal time HD Codec Engine
  • 20X optical Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T Lens
  • 3.5 inch wide hybrid clear photo LCD plus display
  • Super SteadyShot Optical Stabilization System
  • Manual Zoom and Manual Focus Ring – dual independent zoom and focus rings
  • Exposure/Iris Control
  • Expanded Focus Indicator – LCD image can be magnified temporarily up to 4X its original size without any loss of distortion
  • Picture Profile
  • Six assignable buttons
  • i.LINK HDV/DV interface

Here’s the verdict from CamcorderInfo:

Until Sony lowers the price of the HDR-FX7, we can’t give it a strong endorsement. The availability of the XH A1 makes the FX7’s $3500 MSRP seem a hefty price to pay for a “consumer” camcorder. Our advice is to hold off on buying an FX7 until Sony drops its price considerably – or to give the XH A1 some serious consideration.
