Sun Microsystems has finally released version 1.0 of the “Looking Glass” 3D desktop environment. Gosh – I remember hearing about “Looking Glass” many years ago but then I totally forgot about it. Well apparently it was still around!

Looking Glass was first shown off back in 2003 and then released as an open source project in 2004. The platform provides a Java based desktop environment which can run on top of Windows, Linux or Solaris. Think of it as an OS neutral platform which provides 3D user interface elements to your desktop. Looking Glass has some features found in OS X and Vista as well as features not found in either OS.

You can download version 1.0 of Looking Glass here at Sun’s site.
