A little something something about HDMI 1.3
Are you curious about HDMI 1.3? Not sure what it’s all about? Well check out this excellent blog posting over at CNET’s Crave gadget blog. They attended a press event on Monday held by HDMI Licensing LLC which lauded the benefits of HDMI 1.3. Some of the key new features of HDMI 1.3 include:
- Twice the bandwidth of 1.3 (10.2 Gbps vs 4.95 Gbps)
- Can carry 10, 12 or even 16 bit color depths (1.2 can carry 8 bit color depths). As Crave points out - no current consumer source or display can handle 10 bit or higher anyhow
- Wider Color Gamut - compatible devices will have a wider range of colors than ever before
- Dolby and DTS lossless audio formats
- Lip-sync compensation
So what devices support the 1.3 spec you might wonder? Right now there are three 1.3 compatible devices - the PS3, Toshiba HD-XA2 HD DVD player, and the Epson PowerLite Pro Cinema 1080 projector (EPM-TW1000). Oh.. one more thing to remember. Just because you have a 1.3 device does not mean you automatically can do the features listed above. The spec just says these things are possible as a result of going to HDMI 1.3.
