It looks like Toshiba’s second generation lineup of HD DVD players are finally shipping here in the US. AVS Forums members have reported seeing the new HD-A2 HD DVD player in Best Buys across the country.

The HD-A2 will fix many of the issues that plagued the first generation HD DVD player from Toshiba - the HD-A1. Unfortunately the HD-A2 will NOT support 1080p playback. That feature is currently only available on the upcoming HD-XA2.

Features of the Toshiba HD-A2 include:

  • DVD upconversion via HDMI video upconversion (720p and 1080i)
  • Video output in 1080i, 720p, 480p, 480i
  • Combo format disc (HD DVD/DVD) playback
  • Built in Dolby Digital, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS, and DTS HD
  • Advanced High Performance 32 bit Sharc Digital Signal Processing
  • CD audio playback
  • Ethernet connection
  • New improved remote design with glow keys and tv operation
  • Flourescent dimmer

Looks like the going price for the HD-A2 is $499 right now (right about the price of an Xbox 360 core + HD DVD player)
