Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii both beat out PS3 sales in November
NPD research on Friday announced U.S. sales numbers for all three major next generation game consoles for the month of November and the winner was – the Microsoft Xbox 360. However, more importantly, the Nintendo Wii beat out the Sony PlayStation 3 in terms of how many units were sold in the month.
For the month of November:
- Microsoft sold 511,000 units of the Xbox 360
- Nintendo sold 476,000 units of the Wii
- Sony sold 197,000 units of the PlayStation 3
Again these are numbers here in the US. Just for the record, the cost of the Wii is $250 dollars, the typical cost of the Sony PS3 is between $500 to $600 and the typical cost for the 360 is between $300 to $400. NPD is stil calculating the histocail console sales data at this time but they did announce that video game related sales topped out at around 1.7 billion for the month of November.
Sales of games for consoles and portable game devices were roughly $804 million dollars while hardware devices numbered in the $771 million range.
Microsoft expects to ship 10 million Xbox 360 consoles by year end. In contrast, Nintendo is expected to ship 4 million Wiis by the end of the year while Sony should top out at around 2 million (though some doubt they can even hit that number).
Here’s a blurb from the Reuters article on how NPD receives its’ data:
NPD receives data representing approximately two-thirds of the U.S. retail sales and makes projections for the remainder of the market based on a sampling of U.S. consumers.
