In an effort to reduce dependence on foreign developed technologies, China’s top electronics makers began rolling out new video players supporting a Chinese developed format called EVD. EVD stands for Enhanced Versatile Disc and is designed to produce higher picture quality than standard DVDs.

EVD was first released in 2003 but never really caught on. Now, Chinese manufacturers are at it again – developing dozens of video players that will support the format in an effort to reduce dependency on technologies developed by foreign countries. Chinese manufacturers are hopeful that this new push will catch on – especially since these very same hardware manufacturers produce nearly 80 percent of the world’s DVD players.

54 new EVD players will shown by 20 Chinese manufacturers this past Wednesday at a Beijing Art Gallery. EVD players are expected to cost around $87 dollars which is far less than HD DVD or Blu-ray players currently out on the market. Spec wise, EVD supports 1080i and 720p video.
