PC Magazine has posted their review of the new LG enV VX9900 mobile phone here on their website and man, it’s disheartening to read. It appears that the phone could have been the ultimate Sidekick killer phone were it not for Verizons’ software design and pricing schemes.
In fact, reading the review really makes you think about Verizons’ pricing policies. According to the review, it’ll cost you a pretty penny to get ordinary POP3/IMAP support (if you don’t want to use their Wireless Sync feature). There’s also no unlimited text messaging plan for this phone.. what the heck? This quote from the review is what does it for me:
Yes, you heard right: If you want to use all the capabilities on this non-smartphone, it can cost you more per month than if you’d bought a full-fledged smartphone. That’s insane.
Of course the reviewer does note that if you don’t plan on using the enV like a smartphone, then the costs will come down dramatically… but that’s a shame considering how cool the keyboard is on this phone. One other interesting note – Verizon apparently liberated Bluetooth support on this phone. Finally.. SO here’s the verdict:
This terrific text-messaging camera phone could be so much more, if only Verizon let it.
