Not gadget news this morning but cool science news nevertheless. NASA announced just moments ago that water could still flow occasionally on Mars. The proof lies with NASA photographs of a crater in the Centauri Montes region. Two pictures of the craters’ region were compared – one taken in August of 1999 and one taken in September of 2005. The latter photograph shows bright new deposits within two gullies that do not exist in the early photograph. This suggests water may have carried sediments through the gullies during the seven years that passed.

The current evidence points to the possibility that water indeed may exist in flowing form on Mars – at least for a short amount of time. The atmosphere is too thin on Mars to allow water to exist in a liquid state. Liquid water will either evaporate or freeze after a short amount of time on the surface of Mars. Researchers are theorizing that water rises from beneath the surface of Mars and is able to briefly flow down the slopes of the surface before evaporating or freezing.

Pretty cool stuff.
