I know this is a little late, I had the same problem described by Matt about Vista MC crashing when he enters the Video Library. I also had noticed the extra shares in the explorer list. My mistake was that I had deleted some of them. Then the crashing in MC began. It appears that MC uses those shares in some way to track the Video Library indexing. It also seems that those shares are only created one time. I was unable to find a way to force Vista to recreate the shares. The only way that I could restore my video library functions was to use the restore function in Vista to a point prior to my deleting the shares. The restore worked, all the shares came back and my Video Library is now working properly again.

Hi, I was just curious if there is a plan for ATI (or other vendors) to provide PC HDTV recording for Direct TV either via component output or HDMI output from the Direct TV HD receiver.

Thanks. Hn.

Well, just updated my maching to Vista and everythings works well except the follwing 2 things: 1) The Video Libary menu option under Vista and 2) any type of video playback within Media Center (normal media player works just fine). For some reason that I can't figure out, upon navigation to the Video Library the MC just crashes. And video playback doesn't work even for the sample videos. Haven't tackled live TV yet. Music, photos and online services work well. Any info as to what player/codec settings MC uses and/or where MC keeps it detailed configuration settings?
I also noticed that Vista displays network shares in the explorer list and therefore all programs like Media Center think that they are other drives but really they are just shares from the same machine.

One feature that I like about my standalone DVD player that MCE2005 does not seem to have is the ability to remember where a DVD is stopped. In the standalone player, if I remove the DVD and reinsert it, I can still resume from the previous stopping point. Within MCE2005, I observe similar functionality when playing a DVD through the computer's DVD player as long as I don't remove the DVD or switch to watching tv (live or recorded) or play music files. Can Vista MCE remember where a DVD was stopped/paused even after the disc is removed and reinserted?

I just installed Vista on a core 2 Duo with 1GB DDR2 and ATI X300. Using a Leadtek DTV2000H for digital aerial I ran into stuttering as well. I looked at the CPU use and it was low. However, as I reduced resolution to 480p to match projector the stuttering disapeared. It seems that video is the key.

I've just upgrade to vista and am using Vista on the Xbox 360. I have had no problems at all, in fact TV channel changing is now faster and so is the general responsiveness of the GUI on the xbox360. No problems with MPEG decoder so far. Using a 3ghz prescott single core CPU and 1 Gbit ram and ATI 9600 XT video card.

So I think the lesson here is that is still very much depends on your hardware set-up and how well these components work together. I put my successful upgrade down to all the struggles I had making XP MCE 2005 work on my Shuttle XPC.

I for one, salute Microsofts implementation of MCE on vista. Now if only they would activate DVD playback over extenders.

hoopsdavis - that's weird - you were getting stuttering via DVI? You know. I would avoid the ATI drivers from the website for now and perhaps roll back to the WDDM drivers that shipped with Vista. In fact, if you have the time and you don't mind doing extra work, I would just start over from scratch and reinstall Vista. I had uninstalled the ATI drivers from the web and somehow it still stuttered a bit.. but after a full reinstall of the OS with the default drivers - everything was good to go.

Thanks Felix, I agree the MS MPEG-2 decoder isn't so good.
I got rid of the stutter by switching from DVI to svideo, and now there's no stutter but my picture is kinda ghostly.

Have you experienced this, if so were you able to get it cleaned up?

I'm using the latest drivers from the ATI/AMD site, wondering if the image on live tv would be better with the default drivers that come with Vista

hoopsdavis - here's what happened in my case (and hopefully it'll be some help to you).
When I first installed Vista, I also installed the latest Nov. 2nd ATI drivers from the ATI website. I ended up having quite a bad stuttering issue under HD though it didn't really occur under analog. I eliminated most of the stuttering by turning off Aero and running some other performance enhancements.

Then I ran into the DVI problem with my TV set and so I thought .. well maybe it was the Nov. 2nd ATI drivers that were the problem. So I uninstalled the drivers and the control center and went back to the original Vista WDDM drivers that came with the final build. That seemed to work OK.. though I still had a minor stutter in live TV every 6-7 seconds or so.

So I thought - ok.. ONE last try. I would wipe the system and start from scratch and ONLY install external drivers if I really had to - which meant my Audigy 2 card and my AVerMedia card and that's it. I stuck with the default WDDM driver from Vista final and what do you know - the stuttering was gone. I also disabled Aero AND I disabled some services I didn't need etc. Things seem ok now.. although I hate the MPEG2 decoder quality for analog shows.

Hope that helps!
