As most of you already know, the Nintendo Wii launched nationwide yesterday and it appears the launch itself was fairly smooth. As expected, there were some minor glitches along the way but certainly nothing like the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 glitches that came from their respective launches.

The main problem that appears to be affecting some people out there are Nintendo Wii’s with older firmwares. Most Wii’s shipped out came with the latest firmware updates but there were a few that didn’t have the latest firmware and just didn’t work very well at all.

Other reported problems according to IGN include:

  • Wii have occasional problems connecting to a wireless router
  • Problems with detecting certain movements with the remote
  • Disc drive issues with some games not being read at all

Not too bad all things considered! Overall the general feeling with the Wii is that it’s just a fun console. Yes the PS3 is technologically amazing.. yes the Xbox 360 has a ton of games now.. but the Wii is fun.. fun for everyone.

Here are a couple of reviews for the Wii (some of which we’ve mentioned before but we thought we put up anyhow).

From PC Magazine:

The Nintendo Wii is a fun, engaging, wildly innovative game console that’s dramatically different from the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, and way more affordable, too.

From CNET:

It lacks the graphical prowess and rich media features of the Xbox 360 and the PS3, but the Nintendo Wii’s combination of unique motion-sensitive controllers and emphasis on fun gameplay make the ultra-affordable console hard to resist.

From DigitalTrends:

A fantastic effort that you’ll have to try firsthand to believe, the Wii finally sees Nintendo return to form..

From Forbes:

It’s too early in the console war to tell if the Wii’s upstart strategy will help Nintendo gain ground against Microsoft and Sony, both 800-pound gorillas of the gaming world. But if my early experience with the console–and the smiles on the faces of friends and colleagues–are any measure, Nintendo’s got a huge hit on its hands.

From PVRBlog:

Overall, I’m happy with it and can see it being interesting long after the newness wears off. It’s fairly cheap ($250) compared with most game systems and is great for kids and casual gamers. That games that shipped on launch day are enough to blow minds and I’m looking forward to all the games that will use the motion controller in the future.

Go Wiiiiiii!!!!!!!!!!
