It looks like Toshiba has begun shipping it’s second generation HD DVD players according to the folks at Akihabara News. As previously announced, Toshiba has a new HD DVD player in the form of the HD-XA2 which features:

  • outputs 1080p (1920 x 1080) via HDMI 1.3
  • Incorporates 297MHz/12 bit video DAC with high quality 4x oversampling
  • Picture setting function allowing customers to optimize picture quality with user adjustable settings for color, contrast, brightness, edge enhancement, and block noise
  • High gloss, black acrylic face plate and slim chassis design

The price of the HD-XA2 is expected to be $999.99 when it launches in the US in Dec.

Akihabara is also reporting that Toshiba has introduced a lower end HD DVD player called the HD-XF2 but it honestly looks like the HD-A2 that we’ve been expecting to see. The pictures seem to match up to everything that we know about the HD-A2 so I’m inclined to think that Akihabara got things mixed up perhaps. Anyhow, the HD-XF2 or HD-A2 supports 1080i instead of 1080p and is definitely slated for the lower end market.
