XYZComputing has published their review of the Netgear SPH101 Skype WiFi Phone here on their website. The SPH101 is shaped like a typical candy bar style mobile phone but it’s purpose is signficantly different. With the SPH101 Skype phone in hand, you’ll be able to connect to WiFi networks and make free phone calls to other Skype users or pay low rates for phone calls to normal phone numbers.

One of the cooler things about the SPH101 is the fact that it doesn’t need a PC to make the phone call happen – all you need is a wireless network to connect to.

The phone measures 110 x 47 x 21 mm and weighs a scant 0.11 grams. It supports WEP 40/64 bit and 128 bit security as well as WPA-PSK security. It’s also 802.11g compliant and will connect to the older 802.11b network as well. Battery life is a bit short at 2 hours for talk time and 20 hours for standby time. Sound like you basically need to make sure the phone is docked.

Here’s the verdict on the phone:

In order to make this experience as similar as possible to using a normal phone line, I will certainly be picking up some sort of WiFi phone, and the Netgear is near the top of my list. There are a few other very good ones out, but the SPH101 is capable and easy to operate.

Definitely something to consider..
