You know, I’ll be honest. I’ve never really been that interested in portable DVD players. I think it’s primarily because 1) I’ve always had a laptop on hand and 2) I find the designs rather boring. However, I do see the need for these devices – especially when you don’t want to  lug around a full fledged computer (well why not lug around a portable media player then ? I won’t go there..)

Well the folks at amadana are trying to change that perception with the amadana VP110 Portable DVD player. This is DEFINITELY NOT your run of the mill portable DVD player folks. You can tell instantly by looking at the price which is a whopping 128,000 Yen which translates to roughly $1085 US dollars. OUCH. So what the heck is in this 1000+ DVD player you might ask? Well a lot and yet a little..

The amadana portable DVD player is made out of natural and man made materials with the natural part being laminated bamboo. Yup.. you get a cool looking laminated bamboo surface on top of the player which means every player looks a bit unique from one another. What else is in this expensive toy?

  • A whopping 10.2 inch widescreen display – definitely larger than the normal 7 inch displays that many portable DVD players employ.
  • Resolution of 800 x 480
  • Measures 264 x 175 x 28 mm
  • Has an SD card slot which enables the player to play back digital images and videos. Supported formats include: DVD, CD, VCD, MP3, WMA, JPG, MPEG-4, DivX
  • Comes with coaxial and optical digital out

amadana claims the player supports Dolby Digital sound which we interpret as meaning the player has a built in Dolby Digital decoder – but we can’t be sure. It sure doesn’t look like the player has anything more than stereo speakers so we’re not sure what the point is in having DD decoding.

So really.. is this thing worth 1000 bucks? Aside from the 10 inch screen and the laminated bamboo surface.. I can’t say that it is. But hey – at least you can say you spent $1000 dollars on a dvd player!

About the funniest thing with this player is the bottom of the product webpage where they show images of what NOT to do with the player.
