Who needs portable speakers when you have the Samsung K5
I’ve been eyeing the Samsung K5 MP3 player (full model is Samsung YP-K5) at BestBuy for several weeks now.. and why not? It’s one of the most uniquely designed digital audio players out combining a touch screen, FM radio tuner, and speakers into a single device. As Samsung describes it, the K5 is basically a “mini boom box”. Features of the K5 include:
- Alarm functionality – along with personalizing your alarm sound with your choice of music
- Snooze features
- Supports photo viewing
- Comes with earphones with two part buds
- USB 2.0 support
- PlaysForSure compatible
- Supports Samsung’s Digital Natural Sound engine (DNSe)
- 5 modes of preset EQ
- OLED display with 128 x 160 resolution
- Slide out speaker
- FM tuner
- Supports MP3, WMA
- Digital Clock
- 30 hour playback with headphones
- 6 hour playback with speaker
- Built in Li-Poly rechargeable batteru
- Magnesium Form Factor
The real “wow” factor of the Samsung K5 is the slide out speaker. With a simple nudge of the thumb, the attached speaker slides outward with the front portion angling down and outward. The user interface switches from a vertical display to a horizontal display since you’re probably going to place the device on it’s side. About the only thing stopping me from getting this device is the darn price. It’s a bit expensive when you consider it only has 2GB or 4GB capacities with the 2GB easily over $200.
LaptopMag just posted up a review of the K5 and found the following:
At $259, the K5 is pricey when you consider that you can purchase an 8GB SanDisk Sansa or iPod nano (at twice the capacity) for $10 less. Still, for many music lovers, not having to spring for (or schlep) a set of portable speakers will make this versatile player well worth the premium.
