A quick look at the flash based digital audio player market and you’d think the Apple iPod nano owned it all. Truth is, the nano only owns about 2/3rds of the market (which is still pretty darn impressive if you ask us!) with the rest split among manufacturers like SanDisk, Samsung, iRiver and Creative. So for those of you looking to resist the empire that is the Apple iPod, where should you turn to?

Well the good people at NYTimes.com (what the?) posted up an article looking at four different flash players – the Samsung Yepp YP-T9J, the iRiver Clix, the SanDisk Sansa e200, and the Creative Zen V Plus. While all four of these players are clearly not as sexy as the nano, they do offer features not found on the iPod including larger screens, built-in FM tuners, and microphones for voice dictation. Of course not all flash based players are built the same way so which one won out in the end? Well that would have to be the iRiver Clix – purely because the player received the most praise in the article. Although the Clix is arguably the best one of the lot, it’s one of the worst when it comes to sales. Oh well.. at least iRiver will probably stay in business for some time.
