Are you looking to create a home theater PC but you’re not quite willing to shell out money for a new Windows Media Center PC? Well you could either go the free software route and install solutions like MythTV or what not.. or you could purchase cheaper software solutions such as BeyondTV. If you want something that reminds you of the Windows Media Center UI, you might want to check out the InterVideo Home Theater 2 package as reviewed by the folks at OCModShop. With the Home Theater 2, you get a user interface that resembles MCE and you can do nearly all the same functionalities that you’ve come to expect from MCE. Features include:

  • DVR capabilities like time shifting, recording, pause, watch live TV
  • Electronic Program Guide (EPG) support
  • DVD/VCD/SVCD support
  • Suppot for video playback
  • Support for music libraries
  • Plays CDs
  • Support for FM tuner and recorded radio
  • Photo library support

Here’s the verdict of the software package from OCModShop:

For $60 this is a good deal, and you can find it cheaper if you don’t need a remote

3 out of 5 stars

Couple of things to note – you can get a remote control with the package but you’ll need to pick up your own TV tuner if you plan on using your system as a DVR.
