If you’re like me, you’ve perused the isles of BestBuy or CompUSA and have come across various DVD/CD burners with LightScribe support. What exactly is this you might ask? Well a burner with LightScribe support basically means it’s got a special laser that’s able to heat a thin dye coating residing on the label side of a blank disc. Using this technology, one could easy etch a design right on the label side with incredible precision and detail. Of course you’ll need specialized disks to make use of this technology. For more information into LightScribe technology and a general guide to the hardware and software, check out this newly published guide from the folks at ExtremeMHz.com.

But in case you want the simple low down into LightScribe technology, here’s what you need to get things going:

  • A LightScribe enabled drive (there should be a LightScribe logo on the box when you purchase the burner)
  • Label making software which usually comes with the burner – or you can use the LightScribe Simple Labeler downloadable here.
  • Finally, some LightScribe CDs or DVDs which have that special coating we were talking about.
