It’s IDF time folks (that’s Intel Developer’s Forum for those of you not familiar with the acronym) and that means you’re going to hear a lot about Intel roadmaps and product lines over the next few days. The focus today is quad cores baby.. quad cores. Just when we were getting used to dual cores being everywhere comes the move to quad core systems. It was inevitable I suppose! So let’s check out some of the details (which we’ve really known for some time now).

Here are the new processors:

  • 130 watt 2.66GHz Kentsfield processors – also known as Core 2 Extreme QX6700. These are going to be around 70 percent faster than current 80 watt 2.93 GHz dual core Core 2 Extreme X6800 processors
  • On the server side, there will be a new quad core “Clovertown” processor called the Xeon 5300. These will be approximately 50 percent faster than the current “Woodcrest” Xeon 5100 processors

Both new processors will be coming out in November of this year. For those of you familiar with Intel project names, here’s what the new quad core processors are made of. The Kentsfield processors are made up of two Conroe desktop chips while the Clovertown processors are made up of two Woodcrest processors. Intel’s implementation of quad core processors involves placing two dual core processors on a single die. This is different from AMD’s upcoming quad core implementation which actually placed four cores on a single piece of silicon. AMD’s quad core processors won’t come out until next year which means Intel will have a significant head start in this segment.
