Sony has announced that the 20GB PlayStation 3 will feature an HDMI 1.3 output. The 60GB edition of the PS3 was to originally be the only PS3 with the HDMI port. However, Sony decided to add the HDMI port to the 20GB model after seeing stepped up increases in HDTV sales with HDMI ports.

Sony also announced that the price of the PS3 in Japan will drop to roughly $426 including tax. This is surely in response to the possible price cuts in the Xbox 360 in Japan as well as the low starting price for the Nintendo Wii.

Sony will release the PS3 in Japan on Nov. 11th followed by the US release on Nov. 17th. No price change has been made to the US launch with the 20GB still slated for $499 and the 60GB $599. Note that both versions will include the Blu-ray drive (hence the higher costs of the consoles). Again – does anyone really care about Blu-ray right now? We’ll see I suppose. It’s all about content…. which is all about blu-ray drive installed base.. yes a chicken and the egg problem which Sony hopes to solve by making sure Blu-ray drives are EVERYWHERE.
