Merom is finally out for mobile systems – now let the world rejoice! What’s Merom you might ask? Well it’s the mobile version of the Intel Core 2 Duo processor. With the introduction of the mobile Core 2 Duo processor, Intel now has a complete lineup of Core 2 Duo processors ranging from the mobile platform to the desktop platform to the server platform. The transition is now complete.

Of course, the availability of the Merom processor means that there were a slew of Core 2 Duo notebook announcements today. We’ll start things off with a performance evaluation by the good people at ExtremeTech.com. They put the Core 2 Duo and the Core Duo processor through it’s paces on an ASUS Z96J white box laptop system.

Here’s the verdict from ExtremeTech:

Intel ratchets up the mobile processor line, offering substantially increased performance and 64-bit capabilities, but at the cost of some added power draw.

So yes.. the power is there but you’ll also need to supply some power to get power. Get it? Ok.. bad cliche’s but you get the point. Battery life isn’t what it was under the Core Duo processor but you get one heck of a processor in return. Also note one important factor for those of you that actually care about these things. The Merom processor is a 64 bit processor.. so it’s ready for Windows 64 now.. or Vista when it finally launches.

[Chec k it out]
