AMD will be announcing the latest generation of their Opteron processors tomorrow known as “Rev F” Opterons. Officially, these processors will be called the “Next-Generation Opterons” and systems using these new processors will be coming out from Sun, HP, IBM and other hardware manufacturers. The new processors are all dual core models and will support virtualization capabilities, and run with faster memory modules. The new Rev F Opterons also use a new socket design called “Socket F”. Introducing a new socket design means these Opterons will require new motherboards which of course is a royal pain in the butt.. but it does pave the way for the next generation of processors from AMD which will include quad-core procs.

Summarizing the major new features of the Next Generation Opteron – you’ll get:

  • AMD-V Virtualization Technology which allows running multiple OS’s simultaneously
  • Supports higher speed DDR2 memory
  • Comes in three power consumption models

Prices for these CPUs range from $255 per unit in quantities of 1000 for the low end to $2649 for the high end.
