Microsoft decided to show off the first public glimpses of the new HD-DVD drive for the Xbox 360 at the DVD forum today. The external drive is about the size of a hardback book and was playing back “The Phantom of the Opera”. Microsoft claims that the HD-DVD drive will be one of the cheapest HD-DVD players on the market since most of the hard work will be performed by the console’s processors. The new drive is expected to hit the stores right around the holiday season. No price was announced at this time.
