Dell finally opens its doors to AMD (somewhat)
In case you missed it, Dell announced on Friday that they would begin offering AMD Opteron processors in some of their high end corporate level server offerings. This is of course a major coup for AMD as Dell was the last major vendor to not offer the processors. This is the first time in over 20 years that Dell will be offering a processor made by someone else other than Intel. How big is this? It’s hard to say as of yet since Dell isn’t offering AMD their entire pot of gold which is their desktop and mobile lineup of products. However, it does finally provide AMD a foothold into the Intel stronghold. Is this truly a big blow to Intel? Of course not – there’s plenty of microprocessor business to go around and as long as Intel can deliver on their next generation processors, things will undoubtedly still look rosy for them. Also – don’t forget that the Centrino family is a major pot of gold for Intel as they dominate the mobile market despite AMD’s Turion offerings.
