Here’s a totally different kind of gadget under development – it’s called the KOTOHANA and it’s being jointly developed by the folks at NEC, NEC Design, and SGI Japan. What exactly is it? Well they’re flower shaped terminals that use LED lights to express the emotional state of the people. A set of KOTOHANA flowers consists of two flower shaped terminals equipped with LEDs that change in color based on the emotional state of the person using the other flower terminal. The flowers are connected via wireless LAN which allows data to be sent from one flower to another.

Each flower comes with a microphone which captures voice data for processing. The KOTOHANA comes with something called the Sensibility Technology emotion recognition engine which detects the emotional state of the person who is speaking into the microphone. Pretty nifty stuff. The KOTOHANA is still under development but you’ll be able to see it at CeBIT.
