Jon Peddie Research has released sales figures for the desktop graphics market indicating tha the market is now worth 1.6 billion dollars. The three major players in the desktop market are still Intel, ATI, and NVIDIA but Intel’s overall lead has been shrinking for some time. If you’re not familiar with the graphics market or were expecting NVIDIA and ATI to be leading the way – remember that Intel also manufactures motherboard chipsets and many of these chipsets sold come with an integrated graphics unit. Of course that doesn’t mean that a user won’t purchase a video card to be used in the motherboard but it does mean that the sale of the motherboard translates into a sale of the chipset which of course translates into a sale of the integrated graphics component. Intel’s share of the desktop graphics market shrank to 32 percent and it’s command in the integrated graphics market shrank from 61 percent to 50 percent. Intel’s declining market share in integrated graphics is a direct indication of how successful ATI and NVIDIA have been in selling motherboard chipsets with integrated graphics to OEMs out there.
