Server software on a USB stick
A company called “ItWorks” has produced a product called the WebServUSB which basically a series of server software applications made available via a standard USB flash key. You connect the flash key to an available port on a Windows desktop or laptop system and then run the installer application. Next time you connect the WebServUSB key into your PC, the server services will automatically startup. The WebServUSB features:
- HTTP Server
- FTP Server
- ISAP Support
- CGI scripts
- Perl scripts
- Server-side includes
- Document aliasing
- IP Address security
- Username/password security
- User and group authentication
- Remote administration
- Error customization
- Common log format logging
- Configurable MIME types
- Directory browsing
- Anonymous FTP
- Username/password FTP with home directory
- Configurable thread cache pool
Is this a ground breaking product? Not really. Everything you get with the WebServUSB key, you could download and install yourself on a PC. What this device really provides is a centralized means of running these services – not tied to any specific computer but available to any Windows system it’s connected to.
